Skin Clinic
We have a dedicated skin cancer clinic run by a highly experienced and skilled team.
Skin Cancer Checks are an important preventative health care tool and regular skin checks are recommend for our patients. There are certain risks factors to consider that may increase the prevalence of skin cancer such as:
- Very fair skin that burns easily and/or a large number of moles on your body
- A family history of skin cancer
- Previous solarium use
- Outdoor work, sporting and/or recreational activities
- Previous skin cancer.
Examination
The information below explains what to expect during your visit.
- A full body examination is recommended for almost all patients as many skin cancers are undetected or unnoticed by patients.
- You will need to undress to your underwear for a full body examination. A chaperone is also available.
- The doctor will carefully inspect your body all over, looking for abnormal skin lesions or moles with unusual colours or shapes and generally take about 15 minutes.
- Typically, the face, ears, hands, arms, scalp, chest, neck, back, shoulders, legs (thighs and calves), buttocks, feet, between toes and soles of the feet will be examined.
- The genital area is not routinely examined unless you ask, as skin cancers are extremely rare in this area, but we are happy to examine anything of concern.
- A scalp examination is routine if you are bald. If you have a full head of hair, skin cancer of the scalp is very unlikely and an examination would not normally be performed unless specifically requested. If you are not bald we cannot guarantee to find every skin lesion on your scalp so it is important you bring anything of concern to the doctor’s attention.
- If you are concerned about specific spots or lesions the doctor can examine them instead of a completing a full body examination.
- Please advise the Reception Team when you book your appointment.
Treatment
If treatment is required following examination another appointment will normally be needed. Treatment options include biopsies, removal of lesion/s, topical therapy depending on what is clinically appropriate.
